The name "Benelux" is a portmanteau, a word formed by blending the names of its three member states. The term combines the first two or three letters of each country in its own language: (Be)lgium, (Ne)derland, and (Lux)embourg. These three neighboring constitutional monarchies are located in Western Europe and are sometimes referred to collectively as the Low Countries, a nod to their flat, low-lying geography, much of which is at or below sea level.

The union has deep historical roots, originating from an economic agreement signed in 1944 while the three governments were in exile in London during World War II. Officially launched as a customs union in 1948, its primary goal was to stimulate post-war economic recovery by abolishing tariffs on trade among themselves and setting a common tariff for outside nations. This allowed for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and labor across their borders.

This pioneering collaboration was highly successful and served as a crucial model for wider European integration. The principles tested and proven by the Benelux nations provided a blueprint for the creation of the European Economic Community in 1957, which would eventually evolve into the European Union. Today, the Benelux Union continues to foster deep cooperation on economic, security, and sustainable development issues.
