This classic fish-out-of-water comedy centers on a small, isolated San tribe in the Kalahari Desert whose peaceful existence is thrown into chaos by a single object. When a pilot discards a glass Coca-Cola bottle from his plane, the tribe discovers it and finds it to be an incredibly useful tool. However, because there is only one, the "gift from the gods" soon inspires unfamiliar feelings of jealousy, envy, and conflict. Concluding that the object is an evil curse, the tribe sends a bushman named Xi on a quest to the edge of the world to throw it off.

Written and directed by South African filmmaker Jamie Uys, the film was an unexpected global sensation. Made on a small budget, it became the most financially successful foreign-language film in the United States at the time of its release. Much of its charm came from the lead performance by N!xau ǂToma, a Namibian San farmer who had little exposure to the modern world before being cast.

The film's plot intertwines Xi's journey with the parallel stories of a bumbling microbiologist and a new village schoolteacher, creating humorous scenarios that contrast the perceived simplicity of the San lifestyle with the complexities of modern society. While widely beloved, the film has also been viewed critically for its depiction of the San people, but it remains a unique and memorable piece of world cinema.
