The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, widely known as LACMA, is the major institution that recently unveiled its significantly expanded and reimagined campus. The highly anticipated David Geffen Galleries officially opened to the public on April 19, 2026, marking a monumental moment for the museum and the cultural landscape of Los Angeles. This culmination of a two-decade-long transformation has introduced a striking new architectural presence to the city's Miracle Mile.

The new building, officially named the David Geffen Galleries in recognition of a substantial donation, is the centerpiece of LACMA's "Building for the Future" project. Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor in collaboration with SOM, the 100,000 to 110,000-square-foot glass-and-concrete structure stretches approximately 900 feet across Wilshire Boulevard. Elevated nearly 30 feet above street level on seven concrete pavilions, it replaces four older, seismically vulnerable buildings, aiming to redefine how visitors engage with art.

This ambitious $720 million project fundamentally rethinks the museum experience. Instead of traditional multi-level galleries, the David Geffen Galleries feature all 26 exhibition spaces on a single, open floor, promoting a non-hierarchical exploration of art from across cultures and time periods. The inaugural installation, for instance, groups works thematically around major bodies of water, encouraging visitors to forge their own paths through LACMA's vast global collection. The ground level beneath the elevated galleries offers new public spaces, including education centers, dining options, and a theater, further cementing LACMA's role as a vibrant cultural and social hub for Los Angeles.
