IMPLANTED THE FIRST ARTIFICIAL HEART — science

In a landmark medical event on April 4, 1969, Houston surgeon Dr. Denton A. Cooley led a team that implanted a total artificial heart into a human patient for the first time. The recipient was Haskell Karp, a 47-year-old man from Illinois whose own heart was too damaged to function. The procedure was not intended as a permanent solution but as a temporary measure, a "bridge" to keep Mr. Karp alive until a human heart donor could be found. This groundbreaking surgery demonstrated the potential for mechanical devices to sustain life in patients with end-stage heart failure.

The device, known as the Liotta-Cooley artificial heart, was developed by Argentine physician Dr. Domingo Liotta. Made of plastic and Dacron, the pump was connected by tubes to a large external console that powered its beating. For 64 hours, the mechanical heart successfully maintained Karp's circulation, keeping him alive and alert. Following this period, a donor heart became available, and Dr. Cooley performed a second surgery to transplant the human heart into the patient.

Although the artificial heart functioned as intended, Mr. Karp tragically passed away 32 hours after receiving the human heart transplant due to complications. Despite the outcome, the initial surgery was a monumental step forward in cardiac medicine. It proved that a mechanical substitute could temporarily perform the function of the human heart, paving the way for the development of modern artificial hearts and ventricular assist devices that continue to save lives today. The original artificial heart used in the surgery is now preserved at the Smithsonian Institution.
