In a remarkable botanical discovery, the scientific community recently described Ovicula biradiata, a new genus and species of fuzzy wildflower affectionately nicknamed the "woolly devil." This tiny plant, found in the rugged expanse of Big Bend National Park in Texas, represents a significant find for U.S. botany. It is the first new plant genus and species to be formally described from a U.S. national park in nearly 50 years, with the last such discovery occurring in Death Valley National Park in 1976.
The plant's scientific name, Ovicula biradiata, reflects its unique characteristics. "Ovicula" is derived from the Latin word for "tiny sheep," a fitting tribute to the dense, white, woolly hairs that cover its leaves, giving it a soft, fuzzy appearance. The "biradiata" portion refers to the two prominent ray florets that emerge from each flower, which some researchers noted can resemble small horns, contributing to its "woolly devil" moniker. Despite its unusual appearance, Ovicula biradiata is a member of the diverse sunflower family, Asteraceae.
Discovered in March 2024 by a park volunteer and a ranger, the woolly devil is a small, ephemeral annual plant, typically only 1 to 3 centimeters tall and growing low to the ground, often blending in with the pale limestone gravel of its Chihuahuan Desert habitat. It thrives in dry, rocky conditions and is highly specialized, blooming only after rainfall. The initial observation was even uploaded to iNaturalist, a citizen science platform, highlighting the role of public engagement in scientific discovery. Researchers are also investigating potential medicinal properties, as glands found on the plant are similar to those in other daisy family members known for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory compounds. This discovery underscores the vast, uncatalogued biodiversity that still exists, even within well-studied protected areas like national parks.
