Nestled in the heart of San Francisco's vibrant North Beach neighborhood, this historic public space is framed by Filbert, Union, and Stockton Streets, with Columbus Avenue cutting diagonally along one edge. For over a century, it has served as the unofficial town square for the cityโs Italian-American community. The park is famously overlooked by the twin spires of Saints Peter and Paul Church, often called "the Italian Cathedral of the West."
Established in 1847, the park is a hub of local history and quirky facts. Despite its name honoring the first U.S. president, the park's primary monument is a statue of Benjamin Franklin, donated to the city in 1879. The church overlooking the grass is where baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and actress Marilyn Monroe posed for wedding photos after their civil ceremony in 1954.
The area was also a frequent haunt for writers of the Beat Generation, who lived and worked in the surrounding North Beach neighborhood. Today, the park remains a beloved gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a grassy respite for morning tai chi, afternoon picnics, and a perfect view of Coit Tower on the hill above.
