In the acclaimed 1990 film, Kevin Costner portrays First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar. A decorated Union Army officer at the end of the Civil War, Dunbar fears the amputation of his leg and makes a suicidal charge at enemy lines. When he miraculously survives and becomes a hero, he is granted his request for a transfer to the remote western frontier, hoping to see it in its unspoiled state before it vanishes forever.

Upon arriving at the desolate Fort Sedgwick, Dunbar finds it abandoned. His initial isolation is broken by his cautious encounters with a lone wolf he nicknames "Two Socks" and, eventually, the local Lakota Sioux tribe. The Lakota are fascinated by the solitary soldier, and after witnessing him playfully chasing the wolf across the prairie, they bestow upon him the name Šuŋgmánitu Tȟáŋka Ób Wačhí, which translates to the film's title, "Dances With Wolves."

As Dunbar is gradually accepted into the tribe, he learns their language and customs, shedding his former identity. His journal, once a record of a U.S. soldier, becomes the chronicle of a man finding a new family and purpose. The character's profound transformation from an outsider to a valued member of the Lakota community forms the heart of this epic, Oscar-winning film.
