This stylish 1989 romantic drama stars real-life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges as Jack and Frank Baker, a pair of sibling lounge pianists whose stale act is in desperate need of a refresh. Their world is turned upside down when they hire Susie Diamond, a tough and talented singer played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Her charisma and vocal talent revitalize their performances, but her presence also creates a smoldering romantic tension with the cynical Jack and professional friction with the business-minded Frank.
The film is perhaps most famous for one legendary scene: Pfeiffer, clad in a slinky red dress, delivering a sultry, unforgettable rendition of "Makin' Whoopee" while draped across Jack's grand piano. The performance, for which Pfeiffer did her own singing, cemented her status as a Hollywood A-lister. It earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress, as well as an Academy Award nomination, one of four nominations the film received.
The casting of the Bridges brothers was a masterstroke, lending an authentic layer of history and rivalry to their on-screen relationship. The film was also the breakout project for writer-director Steve Kloves, who would later achieve massive success by adapting the screenplays for nearly all of the Harry Potter films.
