The first franchise to experience this unique form of heartbreak was the Minnesota Vikings (Review). Throughout the 1970s, the team was an NFC powerhouse, led by their legendary "Purple People Eaters" defense. This dominance led them to four separate Super Bowl appearances over an eight-year span. However, they came up short each time, losing Super Bowls IV, VIII, IX, and XI and cementing their place in history as the first team with an 0-4 record in the championship game.
For nearly two decades, the Vikings held this unfortunate distinction alone. They were joined in the early 1990s by the Buffalo Bills, who accomplished the incredible and still-unmatched feat of reaching four consecutive Super Bowls. Led by quarterback Jim Kelly and their high-powered "K-Gun" offense, the Bills were the class of the AFC. Yet, they too failed to capture the title, losing Super Bowls XXV through XXVIII.
Despite their different eras and team identities, both franchises share a similar story of sustained excellence that repeatedly fell just one win short of a championship. To this day, the Vikings and Bills remain the only two NFL teams to have played in at least four Super Bowl games without ever securing a victory.
