This well-known location is not on Earth, but on the Moon. Early astronomers, using the first telescopes, observed large, dark, smooth plains on the lunar surface that they mistook for bodies of water, naming them "maria," the Latin word for seas. The Sea of Tranquility, or Mare Tranquillitatis, is one of these prominent lunar maria. These "seas" are actually vast, flat plains of dark basaltic rock, formed by ancient volcanic activity. This particular mare is visible from Earth with the naked eye as a dark patch on the eastern side of the Moon.
The Sea of Tranquility is most famous in human history for being the site of the first crewed landing on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 lunar module, named Eagle, touched down on this plain. Astronaut Neil Armstrong's first words from the surface were, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." The specific landing area was chosen for its relatively flat and smooth terrain, which was considered safer for the historic touchdown. This event, a monumental achievement in space exploration, cemented the Sea of Tranquility's place in history.
