The well-known brand of vacuum cleaner that traces its origins back to a janitor named James Spangler in 1908 is Hoover. Spangler, who suffered from asthma, was working at a department store in Canton, Ohio, and found that sweeping the carpets aggravated his condition. This personal struggle motivated him to seek a better way to clean.

Driven by the need to reduce the dust stirred up by traditional brooms and carpet sweepers, Spangler ingeniously created a prototype from an old fan motor, a soapbox, a broom handle, and a pillowcase to collect dust. This innovative device, which he called a "suction sweeper," was the first to combine an electric motor to create suction with a rotating brush and a cloth filter bag, making it a commercially successful portable electric vacuum cleaner. He received a patent for his invention on June 2, 1908.

Although Spangler founded the Electric Suction Sweeper Company to manufacture his invention, he lacked the capital to produce it on a large scale. Fortuitously, one of his early customers was his cousin, who introduced the device to her husband, William H. Hoover, a prosperous leather goods manufacturer. Recognizing the immense potential of Spangler's invention, Hoover invested in the company and eventually bought the patent and company rights in 1908.

Under William Hoover's leadership, the company was renamed the Hoover Suction Sweeper Company and later simply The Hoover Company. Spangler continued to work for the company as a superintendent, overseeing production. Hoover's business acumen, including innovative marketing strategies like free home trials, propelled the vacuum cleaner into households worldwide, making the Hoover name synonymous with the appliance itself.
