The city that transforms into a "glowing masterpiece" every December around the 8th during its Fête des Lumières is Lyon, France. This spectacular Festival of Lights is an annual event that draws millions of visitors to the city.
The origins of the Fête des Lumières date back to 1852. A statue of the Virgin Mary was to be inaugurated on Fourvière Hill on September 8th, but due to a flood, the inauguration was postponed until December 8th. On that day, bad weather once again threatened to cancel the planned festivities. However, as the skies cleared in the evening, the people of Lyon spontaneously placed lit candles, known as "lumignons," on their windowsills and balconies as a sign of gratitude and solidarity. This impromptu act marked the birth of the tradition.
While the tradition of lighting candles on December 8th continued for decades, the modern Fête des Lumières, as a large-scale artistic and tourist event, began to take shape in 1989 and officially expanded into a four-day festival by 1999. Today, the festival features over 70 elaborate light installations, artistic projections, and performances that illuminate the city's iconic landmarks, squares, and riverbanks. Lyon, often referred to as the "City of Light," truly lives up to its nickname during this magical celebration.
