In the Arab world, this North African nation is known as Al-Maghrib, or more formally, Al-Mamlaka al-Maghribiyya (The Kingdom of the West). The name literally translates to "the place where the sun sets," a fitting title for what was considered the westernmost point of the Islamic world during its expansion across North Africa. For early geographers centered in the Middle East, this land was the farthest west one could travel, the very edge of their known world. The term "Maghreb" is still used today to refer to the greater region that also includes Algeria and Tunisia, but only one country officially carries the name.
