Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, a celebrated vocalist known for her distinctive contributions to the Grateful Dead, passed away in November 2025 at the age of 78 following a prolonged battle with cancer. Her passing marked the end of a remarkable career that spanned decades and left an indelible mark on rock and roll history. She was a significant voice during a pivotal era for the iconic band.

Before joining the Grateful Dead, Godchaux-MacKay had already established herself as a talented and in-demand session singer in the legendary Muscle Shoals, Alabama, music scene. Her powerful mezzo-soprano vocals can be heard on some of the most enduring hits of the 1960s, including Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" and Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds," showcasing her versatility and soulful delivery. She lent her voice to numerous other artists, including Cher, Boz Scaggs, and Neil Diamond, before heading to California.

Her tenure with the Grateful Dead, alongside her first husband, keyboardist Keith Godchaux, lasted from 1972 to 1979. While often providing essential backing vocals that enriched the band's sound, she also took lead or co-lead on various tracks, notably on the album "Terrapin Station" for songs such as "Dancin' in the Streets," "Passenger," and "Sunrise." After departing the Grateful Dead, she continued her musical journey, forming the Heart of Gold Band with Keith, and later, following his tragic death in 1980, the Donna Jean Godchaux Band with her second husband, David MacKay. Her lasting impact was recognized with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994, and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
