In 1993, the hard rock titans released a covers album titled "The Spaghetti Incident?". While the record featured songs by punk and glam bands that had influenced them, it was a hidden track that caused a firestorm of controversy. Tucked away at the end of the album was a recording of "Look at Your Game, Girl," a folk song written in the 1960s by the infamous cult leader and convicted murderer, Charles Manson.
The inclusion of the song sparked immediate and widespread outrage. Lead singer Axl Rose, who had previously courted controversy by wearing Manson t-shirts, defended the decision as a nod to rebellion and an act of artistic expression. However, victims' rights groups, law enforcement, and the public condemned the band for seemingly glorifying a killer and creating a situation where a murderer could profit from his crimes through royalty payments.
Bowing to immense public pressure and criticism from their own record label, the band announced a resolution. While the song remained on subsequent pressings of the album, they pledged to donate their share of the royalties from the track to a non-profit environmental group. Furthermore, the publisher's royalties were directed to the son of Wojciech Frykowski, one of the victims of the 1969 Manson Family murders.
