The famous "Golden Triangle" refers to a specific tri-border area in Southeast Asia where the nations of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar (also known as Burma) converge. The region is centered on the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. Because this designation is tied to a precise geographical meeting point, Cambodia is the correct exception. While it is a neighboring country in the same region, its borders lie further south and do not extend to this particular confluence.
The area earned its notorious name and global reputation in the mid-20th century as one of the world's largest sources of illicit opium and heroin. The "golden" part of the name is often attributed to the fact that gold was used by traders to pay for the opium grown by local hill tribes, effectively making the drug a currency as valuable as the precious metal. This lucrative trade funded powerful warlords and complex trafficking networks for decades.
In recent years, however, the governments of all three countries have made significant efforts to suppress the drug trade and redevelop the region. Many of the former poppy fields have been successfully converted to cultivate alternative cash crops like coffee, tea, and fruit. Today, the Golden Triangle is also a popular tourist destination, where visitors can experience the unique culture and see the exact spot where three nations meet along the river.
