The iconic, yellow-skinned family from Springfield was conceived by cartoonist and writer Matt Groening. Before his television fame, Groening was known for his alternative comic strip "Life in Hell," which caught the eye of legendary producer James L. Brooks. When asked to pitch an animated segment for "The Tracey Ullman Show," Groening, fearing he would lose the rights to his comic characters, quickly sketched a new family in the lobby just minutes before the meeting.

He famously named the characters after members of his own family: his father Homer, his mother Marge, and his younger sisters Lisa and Maggie. The rebellious son, Bart, was a notable exception, with the name being a simple anagram of the word "brat." These animated shorts proved so popular that they were developed into a half-hour primetime series, which debuted in 1989 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

The show's incredible success established Groening as a major force in animation. His distinct art style and satirical humor have also been the foundation (Review) for his other beloved series, including the science-fiction sitcom "Futurama" and the fantasy-comedy "Disenchantment." However, it is his original creation, the ever-enduring family from 742 Evergreen Terrace, that remains his most influential and celebrated work.
