Brigham Young University (BYU) earned the moniker "Quarterback U" thanks to a long and storied history of producing elite passers. This reputation was largely built under the guidance of legendary coach LaVell Edwards, whose innovative, pass-heavy offensive scheme allowed a succession of quarterbacks to flourish and rewrite NCAA record books. Two of the most prominent quarterbacks from this era are Jim McMahon and Steve Young, both of whom went on to have successful careers in the NFL.

Jim McMahon, a two-time All-American at BYU, set 70 NCAA records during his college career. He won the Davey O'Brien and Sammy Baugh trophies in 1981 and was known for his exceptional leadership and toughness on the field. Following McMahon, Steve Young continued the tradition of excellence. In his senior season, Young set an NCAA single-season record for completion percentage and was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy. He finished his college career with over 7,700 passing yards and 56 touchdowns.

The legacy of top-tier quarterbacks at BYU extends beyond McMahon and Young. The university has produced a Heisman Trophy winner in Ty Detmer, who holds the school records for most passing yards and touchdowns. Other notable quarterbacks include Robbie Bosco, who led the Cougars to a national championship in 1984, and more recent NFL draft picks like Zach Wilson. This consistent production of high-caliber quarterbacks has solidified BYU's reputation as a true "Quarterback U."
