Some freshwater turtle species exhibit a fascinating biological adaptation that allows them to remain submerged for extended periods, especially during colder months. While all turtles possess lungs for breathing air, this aquatic gas exchange serves as a crucial supplemental method for survival in challenging underwater conditions.

The mechanism behind this unique form of "breathing" involves two sac-like organs called bursae, located within the turtle's cloaca. These bursae are richly lined with tiny, finger-like projections called papillae and a dense network (Review) of blood vessels. When underwater, the turtle actively pumps water into and out of these bursae. As water flows over the vascularized surfaces, dissolved oxygen diffuses directly into the turtle's bloodstream, providing a vital oxygen supply. This process is particularly efficient in species like the Fitzroy River turtle, which can obtain a substantial percentage of its oxygen needs this way.

This extraordinary adaptation offers significant evolutionary advantages. During brumation, a state similar to hibernation for reptiles, turtles often retreat to the bottom of ponds or rivers where ice might cover the surface, preventing them from surfacing for air. In these cold conditions, their metabolic rate slows dramatically, reducing their oxygen demand. Cloacal respiration then provides enough oxygen to sustain them until warmer temperatures return. It also allows them to avoid predators by remaining hidden underwater for longer durations. While not as efficient as lung breathing, this specialized gas exchange is a testament to the diverse and ingenious ways life adapts to its environment.
