1959 — history

The culmination of the Cuban Revolution marked the definitive shift in the nation's leadership. On January 1, 1959, authoritarian ruler Fulgencio Batista fled the country as revolutionary forces led by Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos captured key cities. This act effectively ended Batista's regime and signified the victory for the revolutionary forces. Fidel Castro, as the undisputed leader of the revolution, arrived in Havana on January 8 to massive crowds and officially became prime minister in February, cementing his control over the new government.

This victory was the result of a prolonged guerrilla war waged from the Sierra Maestra mountains. Castro's revolutionary organization, the 26th of July Movement, drew its name from a failed but symbolic attack on the Moncada Barracks on that date in 1953. After being imprisoned and then exiled for this act, Castro returned to Cuba in 1956 to lead the armed struggle. The revolution gained widespread support from Cubans who were disillusioned with Batista's corrupt and oppressive dictatorship, which he had established through a military coup in 1952.
