history
This pivotal event of the Texas Revolution occurred at the Alamo, a fortified former mission in San Antonio. For 13 days, from February 24 to March 6, 1836, a small force of about 180 Texian defenders held out against a massive Mexican army led by General Antonio Lรณpez de Santa Anna (Review). The defenders, including legendary frontiersman Davy Crockett and knife-fighter Jim Bowie, were ultimately overwhelmed and killed in the final pre-dawn assault, making the chapel a symbol of a heroic last stand.
Long before it became a fortress, the structure served as a chapel for the Misiรณn San Antonio de Valero, originally established in the mid-18th century. While the Battle of the Alamo was a devastating military defeat for the Texians, it became a powerful symbol of courage against impossible odds. The sacrifice of the defenders inspired the famous rallying cry, "Remember the Alamo!", which fueled the Texian army's motivation. Just weeks later, they secured a decisive victory at the Battle of San Jacinto, winning Texas its independence from Mexico.
