Breaking with centuries of royal tradition, the future King Charles III became the first heir to the British throne to earn a university degree. In 1967, he was admitted to Trinity College, one of the most prestigious colleges within the University of Cambridge. This was a significant departure from the customary path for a future monarch, which typically involved private tutoring followed immediately by military service.
Initially, the young prince studied archaeology and anthropology, even participating in an archaeological dig at a Roman site during his studies. He later switched his focus to history for the second part of his degree. In 1970, he graduated with a 2:2 (lower second-class honours) Bachelor of Arts degree.
His time wasn't purely academic, however. He was also active in student life, performing in a comedy revue and learning to fly with the Cambridge University Air Squadron. By choosing to attend university, he set a modern precedent for royal education, one that was later followed by his own sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
