In 1993, CBS attempted to shake up the network (Review) news landscape by pairing veteran anchor Dan Rather with acclaimed journalist Connie Chung. The goal of this co-anchor format for the CBS Evening News was to create a "dream team" that could challenge the ratings dominance of rivals at ABC and NBC. Chung became only the second woman, after Barbara Walters, to co-anchor a major network's flagship nightly newscast, making the move a significant moment in broadcast history.

Unfortunately, the on-air partnership was widely considered a failure. The two anchors reportedly had little chemistry, and the broadcast often felt disjointed. Chung also faced public criticism for several controversial interviews, including one where she coaxed the mother of politician Newt Gingrich into revealing a private insult about Hillary Clinton. Another poorly received moment came during coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing, where her questioning of a firefighter was seen as insensitive.

Coupled with sagging ratings, the network decided the high-profile experiment had run its course. After less than two years, Chung was officially removed from her anchor role in May 1995. The network announced it was returning to a single-anchor format, and Dan Rather resumed his position as the sole face of the broadcast, a role he would continue to hold for another decade. The short-lived co-anchor era remains a notable chapter in the history of television news.
