The iconic Nintendo character, Mario, first made his debut not as the star of his own game, but as a protagonist in the 1981 arcade classic, Donkey Kong. Created by legendary game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, this groundbreaking title introduced players to a character then known as Jumpman. His initial role was that of a carpenter who had to rescue his girlfriend, Pauline, from the clutches of a giant ape named Donkey Kong, by scaling a construction site and dodging barrels.

Miyamoto originally envisioned a game using Popeye characters, but when licensing proved difficult, he created original characters, with Jumpman replacing Popeye and Donkey Kong stepping in for Bluto. The graphical limitations of the arcade hardware at the time influenced Jumpman's design, including his prominent mustache and overalls, which made it easier to distinguish individual pixels (Review). It was during the localization process for the North American market that Jumpman was renamed Mario, reportedly after Mario Segale, the landlord of Nintendo of America's warehouse.

While he started as a carpenter in Donkey Kong, Mario’s profession later shifted to that of a plumber in the 1983 arcade game, Mario Bros., a change that better suited the game’s underground pipe-filled settings. From these humble beginnings, navigating treacherous construction sites and sewer systems, Mario quickly evolved into Nintendo's beloved mascot and one of the most recognizable figures in video game history, headlining countless successful franchises that span various genres.
