HOLLAND or NETHERLANDS — people

The famous post-impressionist artist first entered the world in the small village of Groot-Zundert, located in the southern part of the Netherlands. While many people use the name Holland, this technically refers to a historical region on the western coast that includes major cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The Netherlands is the official name for the entire country, but the term Holland is so commonly used as a synonym that both names are widely accepted when identifying his nationality.

As the son of a Dutch Reformed Church minister, Van Gogh's early life was steeped in the rural, provincial landscape of his homeland (Review). This deep connection is powerfully reflected in his early paintings. Works from his Dutch period, such as "The Potato Eaters," are characterized by their dark, earthy tones and somber mood, capturing the harsh realities of peasant life he observed around him.

It was only after he moved to France later in his career that his palette exploded with the vibrant, brilliant colors for which he is most famous today. This later period produced masterpieces such as "Sunflowers" and "The Starry Night." Despite creating his most celebrated art in France, his identity and artistic foundations remained firmly rooted in his Dutch origins.
