Upon her marriage to Prince Charles in 1981, Lady Diana Spencer immediately became one of the most famous women in the world. She automatically assumed the female equivalent of her husband's most prominent title. As the heir apparent to the British throne, Charles was the Prince of Wales, and Diana therefore became Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales. This title is not granted by birth but is traditionally held by the wife of the male heir to the throne.

Dianaโ€™s identity became so deeply connected with this title that even after her divorce in 1996, she was officially styled "Diana, Princess of Wales." The public's enduring association of the title with her was so powerful that when Charles remarried, his new wife Camilla, while legally the Princess of Wales, chose not to use the title out of respect for Diana's memory. Instead, she was known as the Duchess of Cornwall.

The title of Princess of Wales remained publicly unused for over 25 years after Diana's death. It was only in 2022, upon the accession of King Charles III, that his son William was created Prince of Wales, and his wife, Catherine, became the first person to actively use the title since Diana.
