As India's first Prime Minister following its independence in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru was a principal architect of the modern nation. He served for 17 years, the longest tenure of any Indian prime minister, until his death in 1964. His leadership established a political dynasty that would remain at the center of Indian politics for decades to come, most notably through his daughter, Indira Gandhi, who also served as Prime Minister.

The family's legacy continued to a third generation with Nehru's grandson, Rajiv Gandhi. Initially a commercial airline pilot with little interest in politics, Rajiv was drawn into public service after the death of his younger brother. He became Prime Minister in 1984 following the assassination of his mother, Indira. He served a single term, leaving office in 1989.

This direct lineage makes the Nehru-Gandhi family one of the most prominent political dynasties in modern world history. Together, this grandfather and grandson, along with Indira Gandhi, led India for a combined total of more than 37 years, leaving an indelible and often controversial mark on the nation's history.
