The political entity known as Great Britain was officially born from the Acts of Union, which were passed by the parliaments of England and Scotland and took effect on May 1st of that year. This landmark legislation merged the two formerly separate kingdoms into a single state, governed by a unified parliament located at the Palace of Westminster in London. While we think of the union as involving England, Scotland, and Wales, it's important to note that Wales had already been legally and administratively incorporated into the Kingdom of England centuries earlier through the Laws in Wales Acts of 1535 and 1542.

The road to this union was paved with both political strategy and economic necessity. For England, the primary motivation was security. There were fears that an independent Scotland might ally with Englandโ€™s enemy, France, or choose a different monarch, threatening the Protestant line of succession. For Scotland, the reasons were largely financial. The nation was on the brink of economic collapse following the disastrous failure of the Darien scheme, an ambitious but ill-fated attempt to establish a Scottish trading colony in Panama. The promise of access to England's burgeoning global trade empire and a bailout for its investors proved to be a powerful incentive.

This 18th-century merger created the Kingdom of Great Britain, a title that would last until 1801 when a further Act of Union incorporated the Kingdom of Ireland, creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Even with the political merger, Scotland was permitted to retain its own distinct legal and educational systems, as well as its own national church, preserving key elements of its unique identity.
