history

This powerful Florentine family rose from merchant-class origins to become one of the most important dynasties in European history. Through the immense success of the Medici Bank in the 15th century, they amassed a fortune which they expertly converted into political dominance, becoming the de facto rulers of the Florentine Republic for generations. Their wealth and influence were so great that they essentially governed the city, shaping its destiny for nearly 300 years.

The family is perhaps most famous for its role as the primary financial engine of the Italian Renaissance. Often called the "godfathers of the Renaissance," leaders like Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent used their vast wealth to commission works from the greatest artists and thinkers of the age. They were patrons to Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and Brunelleschi, directly funding many of the masterpieces that define the era.

Their influence extended far beyond Florence's city walls, reaching the highest echelons of power across Europe. The family produced four popes, most notably Leo X, who excommunicated Martin Luther. They also strategically married into the French royal line, producing two formidable queens of France: Catherine de' Medici and Marie de' Medici. Through banking, politics, and patronage, the Medici name became synonymous with the power and brilliance of the Renaissance.
