The man who would revolutionize the piano began his life in Germany as Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg. Already an accomplished cabinet and instrument maker, he built his first piano in his kitchen before establishing a successful business. Seeking new opportunities, he and his family immigrated to New York City in 1850, where he anglicized his name to Henry Engelhard Steinway. In 1853, he and his sons officially founded the legendary firm Steinway & Sons.

Just two years later, in 1855, Steinway patented a groundbreaking grand piano that would define the instrument for generations to come. His design combined a single-piece cast-iron frame with an "overstrung" scale, where the bass strings crossed over the treble strings. This innovative combination allowed for much higher string tension, producing a richer, more powerful sound with greater volume and sustain than had ever been heard before. This fundamental blueprint was so successful that it became the industry standard, establishing the iconic shape and powerful voice of the modern concert grand piano.
