Long before he was known as the "King of Cool," Dino Paul Crocetti was a working-class kid from Steubenville, Ohio. The son of Italian immigrants, he dropped out of high school in the tenth grade because he thought he was smarter than his teachers. To make a living, he took on a series of tough, and sometimes illicit, jobs. He was a welterweight boxer who fought under the name "Kid Crochet," worked in a steel mill, dealt blackjack in a speakeasy, and even delivered bootlegged whiskey during Prohibition.

This rugged start was the unlikely foundation (Review) for one of the most iconic careers in entertainment. After changing his name, he found superstardom as one half of the comedy duo Martin and Lewis. When that partnership ended, he launched an even more successful solo career as a singer with timeless hits like "That's Amore" and "Everybody Loves Somebody." He was also a respected actor, appearing in dozens of films from Westerns like *Rio Bravo* to comedies. As a core member of the legendary Rat Pack alongside Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr., he cemented his image as the embodiment of effortless charm until his death in 1995.
