This popular dice game traces its roots back to a number of traditional dice games, including Poker Dice and an English game called Yacht. In each of the thirteen rounds, a player gets up to three rolls of five dice to try and create one of the thirteen specific scoring combinations on their scorecard. Many of these combinations are directly inspired by poker hands, such as three-of-a-kind, four-of-a-kind, a full house (three of one number and two of another), a small straight (a sequence of four numbers), and a large straight (a sequence of five). The most valuable combination, however, is the five-of-a-kind, which scores the highest points.

According to game-maker Hasbro, the modern version was invented by an anonymous Canadian couple who played it with friends (Review) on their boat, calling it "The Yacht Game". They approached toy entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe, who bought the rights and introduced it to the American market in 1956. Lowe is credited with changing the name and popularizing the game through "Yahtzee parties" to create word-of-mouth buzz when initial sales were slow. Today, it is owned by Hasbro, and an estimated 50 million games are sold each year.
