The delicious and widely loved fruit we call "mango" has an etymological journey as rich as its flavor. The English word originated in the 16th century from the Portuguese word "manga". This, in turn, can be traced back through Malayalam to the Tamil words "mā" for "mango tree" and "kāy" meaning "unripe fruit". The scientific name, *Mangifera indica*, fittingly points to its origins, as the fruit is believed to have first emerged in the region encompassing northwestern Myanmar, Bangladesh, and northeastern India, where it has been cultivated for millennia.

Beyond its linguistic roots, the mango holds deep cultural significance, particularly in South and Southeast Asia. Often hailed as the "king of fruits," it symbolizes prosperity, fertility, and abundance in India, where mango leaves are frequently incorporated into Hindu rituals and ceremonies.
