The dream of reviving the ancient Olympic tradition, which had been dormant for 1,500 years, became a reality in 1896. Spearheaded by French educator Pierre de Coubertin and the newly formed International Olympic Committee, the inaugural games of the modern era were fittingly held in Athens, Greece, the spiritual home of the original contests. The main venue, the Panathenaic Stadium, was excavated and rebuilt for the occasion, connecting the new competition directly to its ancient roots. The event was a resounding success, ensuring the Olympic movement would continue into the next century.
Following the triumph in Greece, the second Olympiad was held four years later in 1900 in Paris, France. These games, however, were a stark contrast to the first. They were staged as part of the 1900 Exposition Universelle, or World's Fair, and were so poorly organized that many competitors were unaware they were even participating in the Olympics. The events were spread out over five months and lacked the focused grandeur of the Athens games. Despite the organizational chaos, the Paris games marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time women were allowed to compete, participating in sports like tennis, sailing, and golf.
