The collection of sacred poems and songs at the heart of the Hebrew Bible contains a total of 150 distinct works. This anthology, which functions as a hymnbook for ancient Israel, is not a single continuous text but is traditionally divided into five smaller "books." Many scholars believe this five-part structure was intentionally designed to mirror the five books of the Torah (Genesis through Deuteronomy), creating a parallel between God's law and the human response of prayer and praise.

While King David is the most famous author associated with the collection, penning nearly half of the psalms, he was far from the only contributor. The compositions span centuries and are attributed to various figures, including the temple musician Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, and even Moses. Many psalms are also anonymous, representing the voices of ordinary people throughout Israel's history. This diverse authorship contributes to the book's wide emotional range, covering everything from joyous praise and thanksgiving to deep sorrow, anger, and cries for justice.

Although 150 is the universally accepted number in modern Jewish and Protestant Bibles, some ancient traditions counted them differently. The Septuagint, an early Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, combines certain psalms and splits others, leading to a different numbering system. It also includes an extra psalm, number 151, which is generally not considered part of the main canon. Despite these minor historical variations, the standard textual tradition has firmly established the final count at 150.
