The twelve months of our year are so familiar that we rarely stop to consider the letters that make up their names. Yet, hidden within these common words is a fascinating linguistic challenge: identifying the first letter of the alphabet that doesn't appear in the spelling of any month. It's a journey through the ABCs, checking each letter against the full calendar.

Beginning our alphabetical search, we quickly find that letters A through J are all well-represented. A is in January, April, August. B can be seen in February, September, October, November, December. C marks March, October, December. D is in December. E, F, G, H, I, and J similarly make appearances across various months, from February and August to January and July. These initial, common letters are all present and accounted for.

But as we proceed past J, we arrive at a notable exception. The letter K, despite being a staple of the English alphabet, is entirely absent from the spellings of all twelve months. From January through December, you won't find a single 'K'. This makes K the earliest letter in the alphabet that cannot be found in any of the month names. This intriguing pattern often reflects the historical influences on our language, particularly the Latin roots of many month names, where K was a less common letter.
