Of the world's five major oceans, the one centered on the North Pole is by far the most diminutive. Covering an area of about 14 million square kilometers (5.4 million square miles), it is not only the smallest but also the shallowest and coldest. This frigid body of water is almost completely enclosed by the landmasses of North America and Eurasia, giving it unique characteristics compared to the vast, open expanses of the Atlantic or Pacific.

A defining feature of this ocean is its perennial sea ice cover, which historically has remained frozen (Review) year-round at its center. Due to its relative isolation and landlocked nature, some oceanographers have even considered it a mediterranean sea, or an estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, to which it is primarily connected. It links to the Pacific Ocean only through the narrow Bering Strait between Alaska and Siberia.

This extreme environment supports a fragile and highly specialized ecosystem, home to animals like polar bears, narwhals, and ringed seals that depend on the sea ice for their survival. Today, this ocean is at the forefront of climate change discussions, as its rapidly melting ice is opening up new shipping lanes while simultaneously threatening its unique inhabitants.
