This well-known brand of artificial grass owes its name to a famous sports stadium and the city's role in space exploration. The product was first developed by Monsanto in the early 1960s and was originally marketed under the name "ChemGrass." Its first large-scale, and most famous, installation was in 1966 at the Houston Astrodome, the world's first domed stadium. To capitalize on this high-profile location, the company rebranded the product, linking it forever to the stadium that made it famous.

The name "Astrodome" itself was a tribute to Houston's vital role as the home of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center). The city's Major League Baseball team was even renamed the Astros to honor this connection to the nation's space program. Thus, the "Astro" in AstroTurf is a direct nod to the Astrodome and the Astros, indirectly linking the turf's name to the ambition and futuristic vision of the space race era.

The need for this synthetic surface in the Astrodome arose from an unforeseen problem. The dome's clear Lucite panels, which allowed natural grass to grow, created a blinding glare for the baseball players. The initial solution was to paint the ceiling panels, but this blocked the sunlight and caused the natural grass to die. The newly invented artificial grass provided the perfect, evergreen solution, cementing its place in sports history.
