When German immigrant Adolphus Busch set out to create a new American lager in St. Louis, he looked to Europe for inspiration. He aimed to replicate the light, crisp pilsner-style beers from Bohemia, a region famous for its brewing traditions. In 1876, he named his new creation for the renowned brewing town of Budweis, now called ฤeskรฉ Budฤjovice in the Czech Republic. The name itself was a declaration of quality, as "Budweiser" simply means "of Budweis," linking the new American beer to an established European standard.
This naming decision, however, sparked one of the longest-running trademark disputes in history. A brewery founded in the actual town of Budweis, Budweiser Budvar, also claimed the right to the name based on its geographical origin. For over a century, the American and Czech companies have battled in courts worldwide. This has led to a confusing global market where, depending on the country, the American beer might be sold
