Blue Whales Heart Is Car-Sized

To power the largest animal that has ever lived requires a biological pump of epic proportions. The blue whale’s heart is an organ of incredible scale, weighing around 400 pounds and comparable in size to a small car. Its main artery, the aorta, is so wide that a small human could navigate its passage. This immense organ is responsible for circulating thousands of gallons of blood throughout a body that can stretch up to 100 feet long, a feat of cardiovascular engineering unlike any other in the animal kingdom.

The heart's performance is just as remarkable as its size. While resting near the surface, it beats a sluggish 8 to 10 times per minute. However, scientists have discovered that during deep dives for food, its heart rate can plummet to as low as two beats per minute. This extreme slowdown is a critical adaptation for conserving oxygen, allowing the whale to remain submerged for extended periods. The sheer force of each contraction is so powerful that a blue whale's heartbeat can be detected by sonar from over two miles away.
