The origin of this widespread myth lies in a 19th-century German study conducted in 1870 by chemist Erich von Wolff. In his analysis of spinach's nutritional content, a misplaced decimal point vastly overstated its iron content. Instead of reflecting 3.5 milligrams of iron per 100-gram serving, the figure was mistakenly recorded as 35 milligrams, making spinach appear to be an incredibly potent source of iron. This exaggerated data circulated for decades, leading many to believe spinach was far more beneficial for muscle building and energy than it actually is.
This scientific misstep gained significant cultural traction and became firmly embedded in popular culture, most notably through the beloved cartoon character Popeye the Sailor Man, who famously gained instant strength after consuming a can of spinach. The cartoon, first appearing in 1929, capitalized on and further amplified the already existing belief fueled by the inaccurate data.
