Standing approximately 21.9 kilometers (about 13.6 miles) tall and spanning roughly 600 kilometers (about 370 miles) in diameter, it dwarfs any volcano found on Earth. For perspective, it's nearly three times the height of Mount Everest and covers an area comparable to the state of Arizona. People commonly believe this fact, or find it astounding, due to the unique geological conditions on Mars that allowed Olympus Mons to grow to such extraordinary dimensions. Unlike Earth, Mars lacks active plate tectonics. On Earth, moving tectonic plates carry volcanoes away from stationary hotspots, limiting their growth. On Mars, however, the crust remained fixed over a persistent hotspot, allowing lava to continually erupt and accumulate in the same location for millions of years, building the volcano higher and wider. Additionally, Mars' lower gravity and reduced erosion also contributed to the volcano's ability to reach such immense proportions.
