The enduring image of Neanderthals as unintelligent, brutish cave dwellers largely stems from early scientific interpretations and popular culture. When the first nearly complete Neanderthal skeleton was discovered in 1908 at La Chapelle-aux-Saints, France, paleontologist Marcellin Boule reconstructed it as a stooped, ape-like figure with bent knees and a hunched back. What Boule didn't realize was that these remains belonged to an older individual suffering from osteoarthritis, a condition that affected his posture. This initial, flawed depiction became widely accepted and cemented the misconception of Neanderthals as primitive and intellectually inferior, a stereotype that persists in common language even today.

However, decades of archaeological and scientific research have thoroughly busted this myth. Far from being dim-witted, Neanderthals possessed brains as large as or even larger than those of modern humans. Evidence reveals a species capable of remarkable intelligence and complex behaviors. They were skilled toolmakers, even inventing a sophisticated glue from tree resin. Neanderthals also engaged in symbolic thought, creating abstract art on cave walls over 60,000 years ago and using ochre for body decoration. Their compassion is evident in intentional burials of their dead, sometimes with elaborate rituals, and in the care provided to injured or sick group members, allowing individuals with severe ailments to survive for years.

The reason this misconception has been so sticky is partly due to the power of those early, incorrect reconstructions and the human tendency to view our own species as uniquely advanced. For a long time, scientists compared Neanderthals to modern humans from later, more technologically developed periods, rather than their contemporaries. This created a narrative where *Homo sapiens* were the "winners" of evolution, naturally superior to their "failed" Neanderthal cousins. In reality, Neanderthals were a highly adapted and intelligent species that thrived across diverse environments for hundreds of thousands of years, demonstrating impressive resilience and ingenuity in their world.
