Neanderthals were unintelligent brutes

The enduring image of Neanderthals as unintelligent brutes largely stems from early scientific interpretations and popular culture. When the first Neanderthal remains were discovered in the Neander Valley in 1856, and later at sites like La Chapelle-aux-Saints, scientists such as William King and Marcellin Boule depicted them as primitive, stooped, and brutish, based on incomplete or pathological skeletons. This initial misconception was then amplified by media and common parlance, where "Neanderthal" became an insult implying a lack of intelligence or refinement. This stereotype persisted partly because Neanderthals were often unfairly compared to later, more technologically advanced *Homo sapiens* rather than their own contemporaries.

However, decades of archaeological and anthropological research have thoroughly debunked this myth. Neanderthals possessed brains that were, on average, comparable in size to or even larger than those of modern humans, though with some differences in internal organization. They were skilled artisans, crafting sophisticated stone tools using techniques like the Levallois method, which required advanced planning and cognitive abilities. Evidence of their symbolic thought includes cave art—such as hand stencils and abstract engravings—dating back over 64,000 years, predating the arrival of modern humans in Europe. They also used pigments and ornaments, further indicating complex behavior.

Furthermore, Neanderthals demonstrated compassion and complex social structures. They intentionally buried their dead, sometimes arranging bodies in flexed positions and possibly including grave offerings, suggesting a capacity for ritual and abstract thought. Anatomical studies of their vocal tracts and the presence of the FOXP2 gene, associated with language, suggest they were capable of producing speech, challenging the idea of them as merely grunting creatures. These findings reveal Neanderthals as intelligent, adaptable, and culturally rich beings, far removed from the unintelligent brutes of popular imagination.
