The dramatic life and powerful courtroom presence of famed attorney Clarence Darrow have made him an irresistible character for some of Hollywood's greatest actors. Spencer Tracy famously portrayed a Darrow-inspired character in the film *Inherit the Wind*, as did Melvyn Douglas in a later television version. Orson Welles played a fictionalized Darrow in *Compulsion*, while Henry Fonda brought the lawyer to life in a filmed one-man show. Paul Muni also tackled the role, cementing the attorney's place as a legendary figure of the screen.
Much of Darrow's cinematic fame stems from his central role in the 1925 Scopes "Monkey" Trial
