While both films feature Hollywood legends scaling treacherous peaks, the stars' personal experiences with heights were dramatically different. Sylvester Stallone starred as a haunted rescue ranger in the 1993 thriller CLIFFHANGER. Ironically, Stallone has a well-documented fear of heights and performed his scenes on modified, lower-altitude sets. The film's breathtaking mountain sequences, which are set in the Colorado Rockies, were actually filmed in the stunning Italian Dolomites.
Nearly two decades earlier, Clint Eastwood both directed and starred in 1975's THE EIGER SANCTION. In stark contrast (Review) to Stallone, the famously rugged Eastwood performed his own climbing and stunt work for the film. He plays a retired assassin and art professor who is coerced into joining an expedition up the deadly Eiger in the Swiss Alps to find his target.
The danger portrayed on screen was very real. The north face of the Eiger is one of the most treacherous climbs in the world, nicknamed the "Mordwand" or "murder wall." Tragically, this reputation held true during production when a British climber on the crew was killed by a rockfall, a stark reminder of the risks involved in capturing such authentic mountain action.
