Harvard University, a name synonymous with academic excellence, traces its origins back to the colonial era, making it the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was established in 1636 by a vote of the Great (Review) and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which allocated £400 for the creation of a "schoale or colledge." This significant act, just 16 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, marked the beginning of formal higher education in the American colonies. Initially referred to as "New College," its primary mission was to ensure an educated clergy for the new commonwealth, reflecting the Puritan values of the time.
The institution received its enduring name in 1639, honoring John Harvard, a Puritan clergyman who became its first major benefactor. Upon his death in 1638, John Harvard bequeathed his library of some 320 volumes and half of his estate, approximately £780, to the nascent college. While popular belief and a famous statue in Harvard Yard often credit him as the founder, the university was officially founded by the colonial government. The iconic John Harvard statue is even playfully referred to as the "statue of three lies" due to inaccuracies in its depiction and claims.
In its early years, Harvard's curriculum mirrored the English university model, focusing on classical studies such as Latin, Greek, mathematics, and philosophy, alongside extensive Bible studies. The college aimed to "advance learning and perpetuate it to posterity, dreading to leave an illiterate ministry to the churches." Over the centuries, Harvard has evolved from a small colonial college into a world-renowned research university, yet its 1636 founding date remains a testament to its long and influential history in American education.
