The great (Review) composer Ludwig van Beethoven first saw the light of day in 1770 in the city of Bonn, then part of the Electorate of Cologne. Situated on the Rhine River, Bonn was a bustling and culturally significant city, serving as the residence of the Archbishop-Elector of Cologne. It was a place rich with music, art, and intellectual life, providing a vibrant backdrop for the early years of one of history's most influential musicians.

Beethoven spent his formative years in Bonn, where his prodigious musical talent quickly became apparent. His grandfather was a Kapellmeister, and his father a court musician, ensuring music was deeply ingrained in his family life. He received his initial training there, serving as an assistant organist and playing viola in the court orchestra. This early exposure to courtly music and performance laid the groundwork for his future masterpieces, allowing him to hone his skills and absorb the musical currents of the late 18th century.

At the age of 22, Beethoven departed Bonn for Vienna, the undisputed musical capital of Europe, where he intended to study with the renowned Joseph Haydn and establish his career. While he achieved his greatest fame and composed his most celebrated works in Vienna, Bonn proudly cherishes its connection to the master. The city is home to the Beethoven-Haus, a museum and cultural institution dedicated to his life and work, and hosts a biennial Beethovenfest, celebrating its most famous son.
