Each of these films from the 1970s and 80s is defined by a powerful performance in its title role. For the 1973 prison epic Papillon, the "King of Cool" Steve McQueen took on the lead part of Henri Charrière, a French convict nicknamed for the butterfly tattoo on his chest. Based on Charrière's own memoirs, the film follows his brutal experiences in, and relentless attempts to escape from, the notorious penal colony on Devil's Island.

The 1976 film Robin and Marion features two iconic stars in its title, making both actors correct answers. Sean Connery plays an aging, world-weary Robin Hood returning from the Crusades, while Audrey Hepburn portrays a mature Maid Marion who has since become an abbess. Their performances anchor this melancholy and revisionist take on the classic legend.

Finally, John Hurt delivered one of cinema's most transformative performances as the titular Elephant Man, the severely deformed but gentle Joseph Merrick. Hurt's deeply human portrayal was delivered from beneath layers of groundbreaking prosthetic makeup that took over seven hours to apply each day. The makeup was so remarkable that when it was overlooked for an award, the public outcry directly led the Academy to create the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling the following year.
