The name of this virus perfectly describes its function and target. The 'H' stands for Human, as it is a pathogen that specifically infects people. 'Immunodeficiency' is the key to its effect: it causes a deficiency, or a severe weakening, of the body's immune system. The immune system is our natural defense against all types of germs and illnesses. Finally, it is a 'Virus,' a type of microscopic agent that cannot reproduce on its own and must invade a host's cells to make copies of itself.

This virus specifically attacks a critical type of immune cell known as a CD4 T-cell. Over time, if left untreated, the virus destroys these cells, leaving the body vulnerable. Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the name for the late stage of this infection. A person is diagnosed with AIDS when their immune system is so compromised that they develop specific opportunistic infections or cancers, which a healthy immune system would normally fight off.

First identified by scientists in the early 1980s, the virus was once considered a terminal diagnosis. However, medical advancements have been revolutionary.
